First Day of School

The first day of school can be a scary thought for a teacher!! The kiddos just thought they were nervous... hehe I'm always afraid that I am going to forget to do something that is oh so important, and ruin our entire first day. However, I realize there is no perfect first day, but I have put together an agenda to help me throughout our first day of Kindergarten!
The most important things that I stress for the first day of school are:
1. Read First Day Jitters, chart our first day emotions, and drink jitter juice!!
2. Find out what your students want to learn in KG.
3. Procedures/Expectations
4. Memorabilia (photo, writing name, etc.)
5. Tour the School
.................................

1. Obviously, one of my favorite activities to do with my kinders is read First Day Jitters. There are so many different and fun activities out there that corresponds with this book. We will begin with reading the book, discussing how we feel, chart how we feel, and make jitter juice to calm our nerves.

This is our simple chart that will put our name above the emotion we were feeling. Students can choose: happy, scared, or sad. I noticed that having fewer options helped my kinders decide how they were feeling instead of having all kinds of different emotions.
2. This is a fabulous idea to do with your kiddos that I seen The Kindergarten Smorgasboard do in his classroom. You ask each student what he/she wants to learn in Kindergarten. Record all answers and revisit at the end of the year. This way you are seeing some of the interests and expectations that your kinders have upon entering your classroom. A completed line on this chart would read:
Mrs. Moss wants to learn how to read.

3. Go over classroom rules, expectations, and procedures. I defintiely reccomend keeping around 4 to 5 classroom rules. The less confusing vocabulary used with those rules, the better.

Also, it is extremely important to model EVERYTHING you expect out of you students. From walking in the hall way to pushing in their chair. Model, model, model, people! How will your students know the perfect way to sit on the carpet if we do not model this for them??? Yes, what an awful thought! hehe Our kiddos learn from us so make sure you are patient and review the way you want things done within your classroom. This will lead to a fun and less chaotic year!
Some things I like to model for my kinders:
Lining up
walking in the hall
bathroom behavior
washing hands, # of soap pumps, etc.
how to sit on the carpet
listening when others are talking

4. Memorabilia
The very first day of school, I always give my students a piece of handwriting paper that has their name written on it. After a small five minute lesson on how we write on handwriting paper, I let students trace their name, and write their name on the following lines. No, this will not be a masterpiece, but it shows me who can hold a pencil and/or write their name.

I also like to do a hand print activity with each student. This is nothing fancy. I created a simple handout that each child put their hand print on, and I will send this home at the end
of the first week.

Take a first day photo of each students. This does not have to be fancy either. I wrote "My First Day of Kindergarten" on a large chalkboard and had each child take their picture with it. Want to get fancy? Take your kiddos outside and take photos. There all kinds of creative first day photo ideas on Pinterest!

Another awesome idea to have your kinders do... name art! This was an awesome idea that I found on Rebecca's blog. I use this as their name display outside of my classroom for the entire year. It's fun, bright, and shows you who can use scissors and glue.

 5. Tour the School
This can be super fun!!! I like to tour the school on each phase-in day with my kinders, and then have a scavenger hunt once we are all at school on Thursday.

This is just a sneak peek at the first day/week books that I have to read throughout the first week of school.
I hope you have found some ideas that you can implement into your classroom. I hope to update this post with more ideas once I get my kiddos, and we get some arts and crafts going in our classroom.
Happy Teaching!

Dr. Seuss Week

It's here, it's here, it's FINALLY here!!! Who doesn't love celebrating the all time favorite, Dr. Seuss??? At SPES, we love Dr. Seuss. Not only did we dig into all of his books, but we make a week long celebration out of Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Each day of the week is dedicated to one of Dr. Seuss' books. After the book of the day is determined, we focus our clothing, lesson plans, and snacks around that book. This is how I set our week up:

Monday - Fox in Socks
Tuesday - Green Eggs and Ham
Wednesday - Wacky Wednesday
Thursday - The Cat in the Hat
Friday - If I Ran the Zoo

To get the word out about our dress up days, I created a little flyer that you can download in my Teachers Pay Teachers store for FREE. Our school sent this home with every student, we posted on our ClassDojo's, and Facebook.

Please feel free to incorporate this schedule into your Dr. Seuss celebration week. I do offer free changes to the schedule upon request. Just email me at hmoss@mctns.net with what you would like changed, and I will get it back to you within 24 hours.

On Monday, we had a student from our high school come read Fox in Socks on our morning news. Beware!! This is a tongue-twister!! I stumbled around with words when it reading it to my kinders. They and I got a good laugh out of it! :) After we read the book, each student received a cut-out of a sock. Students colored the template to match their own socks that they wore. When everyone finished their coloring, we focused on our graph of the day. What better name to call that graph than... Did You Wear Silly Socks? Yes...very fitting. hehe
Not only did we graph our silly socks on our class graph, but the kinders also recorded the information on their individual graphs.
Throughout the graphing, we would talk about possible addition sentences. For example: We have 5 people who did wear silly socks, and 3 three people who did not wear silly socks. How many people have we asked about their socks so far?

You could also discuss greater and less, missing addends, subtraction, etc. The options are limitless!

Once we finished our graphing, we created a fox puppet. Our special fox puppet helped us with rhyming words! Did I mention that we LOVE rhyming words??

One of my favorite activities for Fox in Socks is the exploration of opposites. Up & down, big & little, hot & cold....you get the point:) Even though we didn't go in depth with opposites this year, I plan on incorporating it in next year.

On to Math----> It must have been fate that had us start discussing and exploring measurement this week. After 3 long weeks of addition, the kinders and I deserved a break. Measurement is always a fun and engaging topic to teach. I opened up our lesson with comparing 3 different shoes (my shoe and 2 other students' shoes).

I can't believe I didn't get any photos during our math lesson!!!

Luckily, I feel like you get the point of our measurement lesson:) We discussed longer, shorter, longest, shortest, tallest, taller, etc. Students traced their own feet, and found others in the room with longer and shorter feet than their own. Even though we didn't dive into measuring our feet with cubes, I totally recommend it. They kiddos will love it! We will be doing this sometime this week.

Last but not least, we wrote in our daily journals. Our writing prompt: My socks are _________. As always, I had some wonderful responses and creative drawings of socks.

On Tuesday, we read Green Eggs and Ham. My day started off in our kitchen...making green eggs, of course!! Who better to taste test than the hubby:)

I will continue updating this post throughout the week. Please come back to read more! :)

Alfonzo the Christmas Elf

It's that time of year....Christmas!! Yes, I absolutely love the holidays. Not only have I been getting ready for Christmas in my classroom, but also in our newly renovated house.

Luckily, my hubby loves the holidays as much as I do. He has bent over backwards to help transform our home into a rustic Christmas getaway. (Yep, the hubby rocks!) Please try to over look my blank wall going up the stairs. I'm still trying to collect all the decor that I have planned for that needy, needy wall.

A few exciting events has taken place in our kinder classroom. Most importantly (wink, wink), our Elf has arrived! He came to us a day early....maybe I was a little excited too:)
Our elf left his very own book for us to read and a nice letter from Santa himself. Well, Cara Carroll actually had something to do with the Santa letter. You can find her awesome Elf on the shelf packet HERE. After reading The Elf on the Shelf, we voted on a name. After discussing names, we voted on Alfonzo. Alfonzo it is!

Even though our little Alfonzo hasn't been too mischievous, he has the kinders on their very best behavior. (Thank you Alfonzo!!)

Each day we are recording where Alfonzo is now "hiding" and what mess he made. We write in our journals at least 4 times a week, but Alfonzo has definitely inspired a few of my kinder authors who were struggling to put any thoughts down on paper.
Alfonzo will be inspiring our writing for the next 2 weeks of school. Look out for his mischievous ways!
